Assassination Education by David Witt is a pulsating political thriller with a tinge of the paranormal. Jason Simmon's life turns upside down when a seemingly random mugging leads to the brutal murder of his wife, Susan. The host of a hit TV show called Ghost Stories of the Stars, Jason falls into a pit of alcohol-laden binges, plagued by visions of his dead wife. Soon, he meets Nikki Broussard, a Harvard graduate reporter for the National Conversation. As the two begin a passionate relationship, Susan's ghost continues to haunt him and embroils him in the affairs of William Brandt, an Oscar-winning billionaire with presidential ambitions. After discovering a string of murders akin to Susan's, Jason finds himself unwittingly involved in something grander than he anticipated as his choices will determine the next US president.

David Witt's enthralling paranormal political thriller moves at a brisk pace with numerous twists and turns that keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The narrative incorporates momentous events from America's pop culture and history in an intricate plot that feels authentic and utterly absorbing to read. The characters seem well-developed, and I found them thoroughly compelling. I enjoyed Jason's relationship with Nikki, but it was his dynamic with Susan's ghost that provided the narrative thrust to the story. Witt builds suspense and mystery with each page, ending in a soaring climax toward the end. If political thrillers with riveting characters and a paranormal twist sound intriguing to you, definitely check out Assassination Education.
