Audio Books for Success by Doris-Maria Heilmann presents audiobooks in a new way, encouraging authors to take a proactive step in the future of their stories. A wealth of advice, from conceptualizing the sound and tone of the book to the production and marketing of the title, is present in the pages. Readers will find startling information about audiobooks and their creation. The book also discusses the role of the narrator, covering what an author needs to bring a voice to a title, and the requirements of a serious narrator who wishes to make it his/her profession, including suggestions for the best classes for a competitive edge. The author details the best companies for distribution and notes their advantages and disadvantages. She also appeals to the audiobook listener by outlining the best ways to discover titles that fit their reading and lifestyle needs.

From the formation of the first audiobook on phonographs to the distribution of current titles, Doris-Maria Heilmann’s words and examples are objective, but it’s clear that she hopes to persuade authors to retain their rights as much as possible. Marketing the audiobook is covered in detail from multiple angles and I felt it was one of the most beneficial parts of the book. It was interesting to learn the tips the author provided about the ways to get the best sound quality when an author or narrator creates an in-home studio, and I enjoyed the information about the first audiobooks. Overall, Audio Books for Success is a good reference for anyone who is entertaining the idea of adding an audiobook to their list of works or for a reader who is curious about the process.
