Baby Squashy Face by Becky Carlyle is about a little baby in his high chair getting ready to eat his meal. When his mom spoonfeeds him the first bite, he isn’t sure what to do with it once the squishy food is in his mouth. He can’t seem to chew it and thinks at first that maybe he should spit it out. Knowing his mother wouldn’t like that though, he continues to think. Taking the spoon and rubbing all the squashy food in his hair, the little boy is a complete mess and yet he can’t decide if this is the right way to eat his food. Suddenly a sneeze tips the bowl, splattering food all over mom and himself. After a messy beginning, the baby finally gets what he must do and finishes the rest of the squishy food with no problem.

I thought Baby Squashy Face was an adorable read that reminded me of the days when I used to take care of my oldest niece. Anyone who has had experience trying to get a little one to eat can relate to this book, but it’s also a good read for a child as well. An older child with a baby brother or sister can understand better why their sibling is making a mess and not getting in trouble for it. The illustrations are beautifully done and fit with the storyline perfectly. Both characters are relatable and easy to follow along with. I think Becky Carlyle has created a new, fun, and unique book that children will absolutely love. I can’t wait to read more of her work.
