Do you know the difference between how grasshoppers and crickets make sounds? You will, after reading Backyard Bug Safari by Barbara Teasdale. Many children don’t know how many different types of bugs live in their backyards. Barbara puts the fun into learning. Two brothers, Freddy and Bradly, go bug hunting for Freddy’s school project. Bradly learns many things from his older brother. Did you know grasshoppers are the only bugs that can walk, hop, and fly? All insects have two things in common: six legs and two antennae. Reading this book will give your child a great introduction to studying insects. Your children will also enjoy the two activities at the end of the book. I highly recommend this book for your child. Stick insects look like sticks, but do you know why? This book will tell you.
I am so excited to see books that teach children while having fun. I think that is the best way to learn. When I taught, I always tried to make the lessons fun. Barbara Teasdale wrote Backyard Bug Safari with the enjoyment of education in mind. As a parent, you may want to help your child read this book and help them understand new words such as entomology, pollinate, and metamorphosis. After reading this book, I suggest you organize a backyard bug safari with your child and see how many different types of insects live on your property. Natalia Logvanova makes this little book even more delightful with her drawings of the various insects. Learning about insects can also help children not be afraid of them. This is the best book for children on insects I have ever seen. I used to teach biology and wish my students had had the opportunity to read this book when they were younger.
