Rub-a-dub-dub, it's time for some fun in the tub. Kathleen Gauer's Bathtime Fun! is a great choice to read before or after some time in the bathtub. This rhyming tale begins with Mom scrubbing the hair of her red-haired child. After the business of washing is done, the fun can begin. A tugboat has been safely moored to the faucet and can now be released to seek adventures in faraway lands. These lands are filled with all sorts of creatures, both aquatic and terrestrial. Fortunately, the tugboat comes in handy when a hippo gets stuck in the mud. The adventure ends when the glug-glug of water rushing down the drain begins. Not to worry, the imaginative fun can start again during the next bathtime.

Bathtime Fun! joins the list of clever and entertaining bathtime stories. Kathleen Gauer's rhymes are a pleasure to read out loud. They flow effortlessly from one page to the next. In my experience as a storytime librarian, kids love hearing stories that reflect their own lives. Most kids love playing in a bubble bath and instinctively use their fertile imaginations to create adventures. The illustrations by Sari Richter depict a diverse group of children as the adventures unfold. The main character, with distinctive red hair, appears at the beginning and end of the story. I particularly loved the shark towel. Gauer has also extended the story by adding an animal guessing game. Bathtime Fun! is a delight, and parents and kids will enjoy cuddling together as they read this after their bubbly bath.
