Author Biography

Well, it started out as just a flexible job with useful benefits while I was taking classes to hopefully get into a nursing program. I first heard the term “Barista” when I was in high school. Had no idea what it meant and had no interest in coffee. 13 years later…
I did not become a nurse. Instead, I stayed with Starbucks while pursuing other passions.
I wanted to quit several times but something in side me said the time wasn’t right. I still wanted “something” to show for all the years of working for the company.
Meanwhile, I kept having crazy unbelievable experiences at work. My friends and family were very entertained Many times suggesting that I write a book. So…here it is.

Who is this book for?
Anyone who works in customer service. Anyone who works in food service. Anyone who drinks coffee, Anyone who is a Starbucks customer. If you fall in one of those categories you will find it relatable and entertaining and easy to read.
Enjoy!

Behind the Green Apron by R. L. Farrar is a non-fiction professional memoir in which the author details some of their most interesting stories working for twelve years as a Starbucks barista. Baristas are the coffee chain's front-of-house staff, the employees who facilitate the running of the shop, and all that encompasses making our favorite drinks. Over the course of nearly two dozen chapters, Farrar shares experiences that range from the good, such as the woman who quite brilliantly figures out how to save a dollar on her drink by ordering off-menu; the bad, like the order with 24 packets of white sugar; and the ugly, which comes in the form of people like the overbearing customer who casually openly carries a gun at his hip.

An Uber driver, a mobile app user, and a guy named Bimbo walk into a Starbucks... Oh, have you already heard this one? Probably not, as the cornucopia of stories R. L. Farrar recalls in Behind the Green Apron is unique not only to those who work in the service industry but specifically to the foot soldiers who churn out coffee and grab-and-go treats. The writing style is conversational and relaxed, which suits the tone of its narrative really well. There are some bits where I actually did think the barista was in the wrong and the tenor can occasionally push beyond witty sarcasm into condescension. Still, the book overall is heaps of fun and has a wonderfully fair share of jaw-dropping experiences. The drink recipes at the end are an unexpected delight and make me want to go right out and get a Paradise drink. I promise not to make eight customization requests.

As a fellow Starbucks barista, I absolutely loved reading this book and highly recommend it! Full of funny, relatable moments. There’s so many outlandish experiences that you think to yourself “surely nothing can top this” and you keep reading and you realize that it does, indeed, get crazier. Great insight to what life behind the green apron is really like. The author makes the book feel like you’re having a conversation with a friend, it’ll for sure keep you laughing at all the crazy antics and commentary. Despite the chaotic moments, this book is also full of sweet and heartwarming positive experiences and interactions.
Hoping people read this and not only enjoy it and have fun with it, but also have it be a good reminder that we’re all human and to remember: “It’s just coffee.”

When you read this story told by an insider, you get to know the people who make our drinks and what they have to put up with. Anyone who has worked in the service industry will recognize the difficult customers, and the lack of support on the company side of the story too. The author tells it in a humorous way and not only shares about the negative sides, but accentuates the goodness too.. What an entertaining book. You won't be sorry you bought it, and who knows? You might try to be an even nicer customer from now on.

Definitely recommend this for a fun read! We’ve all been to this particular coffee chain at some point in our life and this gives you an idea of what being a barista in one of the most popular coffee shops is like. Speaking as an ex barista, I can verify the craziness is true.

Having worked in retail with customers similar to those I read in this book brought me right back to the “dark days” but with extra laughs! I was legit LOLing and also super informed. Let’s just say I’ll never ask for a water AFTER I’ve completed my order again!

A lighthearted view of the other side of the counter. You’ll laugh, you’ll sigh, you’ll ask yourself, “Did I do that?” It’s an easy leisurely read and the stories within each page were witty and fun.

I love the way this book gives us a humorous look into the daily ritual of getting your favorite beverage. We get to “walk a mile in someone else’s apron” and get to know the human spirit behind the apron.

A Lesson in Being Human

Bottom line: This is a delightful and informative read that serves up a rich brew of coffee knowledge and an appreciation for the baristas who work tirelessly “behind the green apron.” Whether you’re a coffee connoisseur or simply enjoy a good cup of joe, this book will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the dedicated individuals who craft it.
I am a self-described coffee snob. I dislike drip coffee and K-cups. I’m an unapologetic French press enthusiast. So, when I began reading, I couldn’t help but feel like Alice tumbling into Wonderland. Caramel drizzles and Flat Whites were foreign concepts to me, and the idea of adding a staggering twenty-five sugar packets to my brew was beyond my comprehension!
I found the crazy customer stories to be entertaining and, at times, shocking. My very first job was working at TCBY Yogurt that had a lobby and a drive-thru so I know how busy times are and how having an infinite number of options of flavors and toppings can make life brutal. I have always tried to treat servers with respect because I am keenly aware of how difficult their job is. Be human people! Say, “hello,” “please” and “thank you,” and, leave a tip!
