Between the Causeways by Jeremy Campbell is a slice of life from the Southern countryside that makes the reader forget, for a few hours, all the evil happening in the world. It is called "heart-warming" by the author, but it is much more than that: it is a true story about a stray puppy that needs to be rescued and given a home. Two women and a man respond to that need and soon it involves a small town’s population. As usual, there are ups and downs in their quest, and even some less than helpful people show up on the scene. The book is filled with comments about animals, dog behavior, and their relationships, and anyone who ever owned a pet will instantly recognize the authenticity of the narrative.

I have read heart-warming stories before that I couldn’t finish because I felt I was drowning in syrupy kindness. Not this one though. It feels and tastes and smells and sounds so real that the reader is drawn in from the first page and is instantly catapulted into their world. The author’s style is beautifully descriptive, often almost poetic, and it never gets boring or tedious. The characters are finely drawn, especially Bell and Emma, but I liked them all. The pacing is perfect, alternating between leisurely descriptions and breathtaking whirlwind events that you don’t always see coming. The plot follows real-life events that somehow make you wish that you, as the reader, were actually part of the story and were an active participant in the ups and downs of the little dog’s adventure – good and bad. If you want a few days' escape from the relentless onslaught of bad news in the world, I would highly recommend Between the Causeways by Jeremy Campbell – it may restore your faith in humanity.
