In Between You, Me and the Gatepost by Caroline Erwin, sometimes life is about discovering what is important to you and fighting for it. The three Southgate sisters, Tessa, Maggie and Brooke, are about to face their own separate challenges. Tessa is looking forward to finally marrying her soulmate, Matt. Everything seems to be going to plan when unexpected news threatens to change their lives forever. As Maggie walks into the offices of Gladstone Parker and Parker advertising agency to start her new job, she uncovers some startling information that pushes her into a moral dilemma. Does she choose her career or does she risk everything and stand up for what she believes in? As younger sister Brooke, a talented singer, prepares for Australia's biggest talent show, she finds herself falling in love with her childhood idol and mentor Ryan. Can she remain professional or will her feelings sabotage her lifelong dream?

Between You, Me and the Gatepost by Caroline Erwin is a beautifully written, heartwarming tale that will draw you into the lives of the Southgate family. While this book focuses on the lives of the three Southgate sisters, for me it examines the complicated aspects of relationships too. The passion and electricity between Brooke and Ryan, the meeting of souls with Tessa and Matt and a true friendship and meeting of minds between Maggie and Josh. The three plots were interesting and cleverly intertwined with each other. I loved the introduction of the mother too and the way she interacted with each daughter differently. Every character was captivating and realistic because they all had personality flaws. For me, this book had everything you could wish for; great characters and dialogue, well spaced out conflict which kept my interest, and a perfect ending. This is a fantastic escapism novel but far from the usual sugar-coated romance novels. I highly anticipate the second book in the Southgate trilogy next year.

Is this the modern Australian answer to Little Women?
Although, on a superficial level, Between You, Me and the Gatepost could be seen as a gentle romp detailing the relationship between three sisters, bought up in a typically secure Australian family environment, it is the under-riding themes that add a depth and level of interest to this engrossing novel. How they resolve their moral dilemmas which may, or may not, impact their individual lives, adds a real depth to this novel raising it way above the ordinary.
The characters are well defined and the book intelligently written with the sub-plots skilfully developed. To dub it “chick-lit” would do it a gross disfavour despite the fact it will keep you reading until the last dilemma is solved and the last page read.
Highly recommended.
