Beyond See Level by John Drumgoole Jr follows the lives of four African American men; a lawyer, a football player, an electrician and a music producer. They battle their way through life, fighting ever so hard for what they believe they deserve. So many have gone before them and paved the way, but a lot still needs to be done. Many times they have to work hard to prove themselves, leaving them on the brink of devastation. With a need to survive against all odds, Heath, Omar, Kevin and Hasim have to stick together. Will they succeed in their quest to make better lives for themselves and their families? Is their spirit of brotherhood enough to take them through tough times or will it crumble under pressure? Only time will tell.

John Drumgoole Jr’s Beyond See Level sheds light on societal imbalances and the struggle to overcome these hurdles amidst family and occupational challenges. Beyond highlighting these drawbacks, Drumgoole provides a solution. The importance of sticking together and supporting each other against discrimination and more common issues stands out in the text. In between, Drumgoole inserts words of wisdom on matters of family, relationships and work. I liked that Beyond See Level is also family-focused. The events are well described and, since the book is mostly narrated in the present tense, this makes it more appealing and relatable. The opening scene is intense and drew me in immediately. The three sections contained also makes reading easier. Very profound; I enjoyed it all.
