Bird Watching for Kids is a small, handy guide to getting started bird watching or birding. Author Rich Linville obviously enjoys watching birds and taking photographs of them. The guide outlines equipment that would be helpful in spotting birds like binoculars and cameras with a zoom lens. I like the idea of a journal to record what kinds of birds you’ve seen, the location, and the date you saw them. A scrapbook or photo album of your pictures will remind children of the birds they saw and the adventures they had. Look for hiking trails that have lookouts or towers to observe birds. Readers will learn about bird sounds and how to recognize birds by the call they make. Children will also find out how birds communicate by dancing or singing and why they make these sounds. How can you attract more birds to your yard? Add a bird feeder or birdbath.

Bird Watching for Kids is a good start to learning more about birds. Author Rich Linville mentions several websites or apps that you can use to learn to identify birds. He also offers advice for protecting birds and keeping them safe like putting decals on windows so they don’t fly into a window. He also cautions against using insecticides because some birds might get sick by eating insects or worms. This book contains lots of illustrations and photographs that will help keep children interested in the book. There are several photographs of different birds, owls, and waterfowl. Children can learn more about bird watching by looking at bird identification books or downloading apps on their cell phones.
