How many inhabitants of the wonderful world of birds do you know? Would you be able to come up with a bird name that starts with each letter of the alphabet? Like “A is for Avocet/ Scoopin’ up with their beaks”, “Q is for Quetzel/ Beautiful feathers on its tail”, “S is for Shoebill Stork/ A beak as big as New York?” and “X is for xolmis dominicanus/ Black-and-white monjita is its other name”. The one I’d really like to see is the “U is for Ultramarine Grosbeak/ That big beak might be a threat”. I’ve seen the beautiful evening grosbeaks at my feeders; I would love to have the ultramarine grosbeak pay a visit, too.

Craig Macnaughton’s picture book story, Birds of a Letter: ABC Together! (Learning THINGS), is a fun way to learn the alphabet and to learn about interesting and unusual birds from around the world. This book might be dubbed the ABC of birding. With so many different birds in the world, I’m not surprised that there is at least one for each letter of the alphabet. The language is simple, suitable for young readers, with some interesting rhyming included for some of the birds. And the beautiful illustrations colorfully depict the bird the author has chosen for each of the twenty-six letters. Each bird is described with an interesting trait unique to that bird, along with the bird sounds they make. This is a gem of a book to introduce young readers to the alphabet, reading, and, most importantly, the wonderful world of birds.
