Drawing from his life experiences, John Kerl offers poetry lovers a captivating collection of poems with Brevity. Written over thirty years, these poems touch upon various aspects of life, relationships, and nature, as well as the changing dynamics of a person's priorities as they age. In "Simplicity," the narrator recalls those seemingly simple moments in time that leave you wondering 'what if?' for the rest of your life. "Nomad" reveals the wandering soul of a man who feels at home wherever he goes. In "Issue," the narrator discovers the importance of mundane chores that no one wants to do. "Morning Part Two" shows how some things change over the years, yet others remain the same. In "Belongings," the narrator and his partner welcome a new family member home.

Brevity is an enthralling poetry collection that encapsulates a life fully lived. With his mesmerizing verses, John Kerl creates a vivid portrait of life painted with distinct and lively brush strokes in hues of his own experiences. The author uses free verse poetry with a lyrical flair that feels unique and authentic. These poetic stories feel personable and intimate, as well as strangely relatable. There is a mature and nostalgic feeling to the poems penned in the later years compared to the youthful effervescence showcased in the earlier poems. While some traverse the realms of first love, romance, and yearning, others focus on parenthood, unexpected wonders, and even the seemingly mundane events of life. As a poetry reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and think others will feel the same!
