But Do You Love Me with Locura? by Sharon Steeber is an immersive historical romance novel led by characters from different cultural backgrounds. In 1985, Rosie Logan travels from her hometown in California to Cuernavaca, situated in the heart of Mexico, for a four-week Spanish course. She hopes to master Spanish and finally advance her journalism career. While in Mexico, she takes on an assignment from her editor back home and writes an article concerning rural Mexican women’s attitude to birth control. While working on the story, she arranges an interview with Doctor Juan Ramón, the head of a struggling clinic who is initially irritated by Rosie’s interruption. With time, they grow closer, but their cultural differences, heightened by their loyalties to their parents, threaten to keep them apart.

Sharon Steeber expertly explores the internal conflicts within the characters and the external disagreements between Rosie and Juan Ramón. I enjoyed seeing both grow as individuals and as a couple. In addition, I appreciated that the story explores the cultural context in which their relationship is built. Descriptions of rural Mexican culture and prevailing viewpoints during the story's era were vivid and captivating. Despite the language and cultural barriers that arise between Rosie and Juan Ramón, the story still skillfully captures their deep connection. Its ending is beautiful and rewarding. But Do You Love Me with Locura? is a splendid work with fleshed-out characters and captivating cultural detail. Highly recommended.
