“Flying flower” – I love that name for butterflies. It certainly sums them up. They are all uniquely beautiful in so many ways. They flutter about the gardens and meadows with reckless abandon, taking over the landscape with their flashes of color. There are a wide variety of colorful butterflies around the world, with each region being known for its particular species. Some of these are described in Butterflies of Kazakhstan and Central Asia: Rare and Beautiful by Vladimir A. Timokhanov. Each species has its unusual characteristics and habits, far more than just the alluring colorful wings and the wide variety of wingspans. Many are named after Greek gods or even various historical nobles, perhaps symbolizing their almost divine attributes. Poets, writers, artists, and gardeners alike are attracted to the almost mystical allure of butterflies.

Vladimir A. Timokhanov’s book Butterflies of Kazakhstan and Central Asia is a fascinating study of more than fifty butterfly types from one distinct region. The author has provided spectacular illustrations, not just of the butterflies, but also of their habitat, their food sources, and their specific attributes. There are also illustrations of the regions where these butterflies live. The selection of butterflies discussed represents more than fifteen butterfly families and the author presents them in family groups. There is a thorough introduction and conclusion which provides in-depth information on the butterflies in general as well as the region they inhabit. This is an in-depth, interesting, and thorough look at the butterflies of Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
