You have probably read a viral article about persons seeing religious images in the most unlikely places and objects like an animal cracker, bread toast, clouds, or a wall. In the case of author Lisa Leikam, she found a life-changing sign from heaven that mysteriously formed in her trashcan. In her book, Captured In A Life Case For Truth: What Lies Within, she recounts that the nature of her experience is one that she considers a spiritual awakening. She opens up to express that all the events taking place in her life, from the explainable to the mystical, are all revelations of God’s grace coming to her in a time when she needed Him most. The image, made of ashes, to which she refers to as the totem of souls, has become instrumental in her spiritual healing journey.

Think of Captured In A Life Case For Truth as narrative memorabilia. Leikam’s writings attest to the fact that the heart and mind are important players in our spiritual life. She leaves her heart and mind open to the possibilities that Providence can give signs in the most unexpected and bizarre ways. And why not? God manifested Himself as a burning bush to Moses, did He not? As the scientific community refers to this perception as face pareidolia, in which the brain helps produce expectation of what an image should look like (and it is perfectly normal), you cannot help but admire Leikam for elaborating her perception into a profound epiphany. Now that is what you call faith. It is taking her trust in an image and interpreting it as the rock on which she stands. To anyone who thinks that faith has no more power to move mountains, Leikam’s personal journey will make you rethink.
