Coming Out Alive! Navigating Postmodern Philosophy and Culture by Karen E. Cedergren is a one-of-a-kind book on how Postmodern culture and philosophy have changed the worldview. Almost a critical analysis of what is happening in the world at the moment and its consequences on believers, the author takes a deep look at what postmodernism has done to religion. After detailing what pre-modernism, modernism, and postmodernism are, she starts her narrative on how the Church has been affected by it. Culture has changed, and this has had a direct impact on the Church and people’s beliefs. Instead of being radical and canceling everything, the author calls for a renaissance where the Church and believers can see where things went wrong and how they can restore religion to where it belongs. She doesn’t talk about boycotting anything; she just urges the Church to be a little less like the world and be more like what Christianity should be.

Short, direct, and very easy to digest, author Karen E. Cedergren did a fantastic job with the research and driving her point home without sounding conceited. Instead of just sharing her ideas, she lays the facts down before sharing her findings with readers. She is basically calling out churches and how they have become lifeless. Instead of keeping tradition alive, churches have become a little lazy in preaching and keeping God’s name alive. People who are searching for guidance cannot find it in the churches, and people are drifting away from religion. But she isn’t just registering her grievances. She understands why things have changed and how we can get out of this mess quickly. This simple book is helpful, educational, and inspirational!

Coming Out Alive! Navigating Postmodern Philosophy and Culture is a work of non-fiction in the religion and philosophy subgenres. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Karen E. Cedergren. The book is a discussion on how the current ideas of postmodernism affect the faith of people struggling with their religious ideals. Taking care to support its arguments with scripture, the book discusses how a person of faith can live in the postmodern world without compromising the core tenets of their faith and their fidelity to Christ.

There are a lot of fascinating academic discussions to be had on whether faith can survive in the postmodern world or whether the devout must keep themselves blind to their own culture to preserve their beliefs. Fortunately, author Karen E. Cedergren has put together an earnest manifesto for people of faith who feel at odds with the world around them. It’s a manifesto that bases itself not just on scripture but in reality to show readers how a person can fight for their faith in today’s society. The wisdom shared by the author throughout the book is tempered by the wisdom of experience and supported by passages from scripture, contextualized for the 21st century. Overall, Coming Out Alive is an essential read for people having a crisis of faith that stems from their Bible seemingly going against the postmodern ideals, people who need to be reminded that their faith has a place in the world and, by extension, so do they.

We live in difficult times for the Church. Instead of remaining faithful to the Christian message as reported in the Holy Scriptures, many pastors and common people make a different choice. They rather accept new trends and modernize instead of remaining faithful to what has worked well until now. In Coming Out Alive! Navigating Postmodern Philosophy and Culture, Karen E. Cedergren raises awareness of these issues by analyzing current society and making readers conscious of what is happening. In particular, she explores the changes that are now taking place and that cancel everything that has an authentic Christian reference. The author also invites readers to reflect on the effects of Postmodernism on the Church, on the Postmodern contextualization of the Gospel, on truth, purity, and many other remarkable topics.

Coming Out Alive! is a book that finely analyzes the changes that are happening in the world and alarm people who consider themselves good Christians. Karen E. Cedergren writes clearly and does not mince her words - something I appreciate. She focuses the reader's attention on questionable things happening in the Church (to make things more attractive to Millennials) and in society at large (genders and avoidance of using terms that may offend non-believers). I particularly liked when the author lingers on truth and purity; two issues that, to be understood, need an exceptional explanation like the one the author gave. I recommend Coming Out Alive! to all concerned Christians who look for safe and reliable guidance such as that offered by Cedergren.

I found this book extremely insightful. The author brings a fresh approach to the topic of the current condition of Christianity in this cultural environment and offers real solutions to the reader. The author backs up what she writes with current affairs research and an abundance of Scripture verses. I would recommend this book to every Christian believer. This book will prove to be an extremely helpful tool in the hands of pastors, Bible School / Seminary students, and parents.
