Confessions of a Surgeon: A Deeper Cut is a memoir by Paul A. Ruggieri, MD. Years of practicing medicine take their toll on physicians and especially surgeons. The steady flow of patients and their needs contribute to a surgeon’s burnout each day. Yet, despite their fatigue, bodily aches, pains, and need for time away from the operating room, surgeons return to the hospitals and tend to their patients with the care each person requires. Even though the medical field is highly influenced by healthcare costs, insurance, lawsuits, and politics, surgeons maintain their oath to care for those in need. Although some surgeons have abruptly left work for understandable reasons, most have stayed working, sacrificing their personal and family time even after their patient is no longer in the hospital.

Confessions of a Surgeon by Paul A. Ruggieri, MD sheds light on the true life a surgeon faces from the moment they accept their first tenure. I enjoyed reading about the unwavering care Ruggieri showed his patients while talking to them and through the follow-up care. It is heartbreaking that physicians and surgeons set aside so much of their life, including their personal life, to care for their patients' needs. However, I find it inspiring that surgeons like Ruggieri give so much of themselves without letting their patients know that the physical, mental, and psychological wear and tear get to them. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys memoirs and those who want to know more about what life is like inside the world of medicine.
