Huckleberry Hedgehog likes collecting rocks with his best friend, Olivia Owl. One day, after heading out for more collectibles, Huckleberry met his neighbor, Mrs. Fox. He wanted to help her with her grocery basket, but she treated him coldly. Mr. Raccoon was in a bad mood as well. Even Baby Mia Mouse stuck out her tongue to Huckleberry, and he started to feel bad too. Huckleberry's mom explained that their neighbors learned about too many rocks in the spot where they wanted to arrange a community garden, and they were afraid that their plans would never come to fruition. Huckleberry and Olivia went there and found a rock of unusual shape. It inspired Huckleberry to add colorful messages to the stones. Creating Kindness by Rebecca Greene is an uplifting read for children and adults alike.

Painting rocks is an art form, and depicting meaningful messages on the stones carries the idea to the next level. Rebecca Greene shares her real-life experience, indicating that a funny-looking stone can make a bad day better. Huckleberry's mom's wisdom is a significant aspect of Creating Kindness. She tells her son that the neighbors are not angry with him; they have just learned something upsetting. This simple observation is important not only to sensitive children but to many adult readers too. In Creating Kindness, Rebecca shows her young readers that spreading a good mood is contagious and that they can lead others by example. The award-winning author motivates children to transform something inconvenient, like a rocky surface, into something good. Expressive illustrations by the gifted Rebecca Sinclair add another emotional layer to this beautiful story. I appreciated that Rebecca included step-by-step instructions on how to paint rocks in the book. Creating Kindness is interactive and encourages kids to reflect on the story and answer the concluding questions.
