Dark Queen of Donegal is a work of fiction in the historical saga and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author team Mary Pat Ferron Canes and JR Foley. In this deeply researched and interesting work, we explore the world of Irish clans in the sixteenth century as rebellion, war, and battles for the crown take place across Britain and Ireland. Ineen is married off to an Irish king and immediately incurs the wrath of Queen Elizabeth I of England, setting off a chain of events that will set her son, future hero Red Hugh, up to take his legendary place in Irish history.

Author team Mary Pat Ferron Canes and JR Foley have crafted a superbly involved, in-depth, and immersive work of historical fiction that also has plenty of cut-throat drama, twists, secrets, and intrigue to keep readers turning page after page. It’s clear that a huge amount of detailed research has gone into creating the atmosphere, setting, and feel of the dialogue in this well-penned piece, but more than this, the authors really capture an attitude and personality about sixteenth-century Donegal that brings the past to life in an intrinsically human way. This allows us to relate to Ineen and her kin despite the vastly different world of today, and her emotional journey and family legacy are all the more inspiring knowing that it comes from a place of truth. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Dark Queen of Donegal to fans of deep and engrossing historical fiction everywhere.
