Day Sleepers by authors Tristan and Steve Ryan is the first book in the Day Sleepers Series. Jupiter and Stephanie received ghost-hunting equipment from their parents, and they searched their house for ghosts without success. When a new kid, Rusty, moves in next door and starts experiencing paranormal activity, it seems like the perfect opportunity for the siblings to strengthen their ghost-hunting expertise. After picking up on an entity that travels through most of the rooms in Rusty's house, Jupiter and Stephanie enlist the help of their friends, Vex and Freddy. The five friends follow the ethereal being through the house and into the basement, discovering a secret that may be sinister, ancient, or otherworldly.

Tristan and Steve Ryan take their readers through heart-pounding twists and turns in a story that is certain to keep readers flipping the pages. The authors address a component of horror that isn't often touched on by other writers and provide an extra layer of fear as the friends learn they aren't the first ones to encounter the entity. The narrative takes young readers to the edge of their seats as they follow the plot while the five friends discover what truly drifts through Rusty's home each night. The characters are in middle school, and even though they make some reckless decisions during their hunt, they aren't openly defiant or sampling other risky behaviors. Day Sleepers is a great selection for middle-grade readers who enjoy mysteries and supernatural stories.
