In his valuable work, Democracy: Is This How It Dies, Jeff Hawkins examines the meaning of democracy and analyzes the American past and present political cultures with regard to democracy. As Hawkins notes in the work, the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States in 2016 led many to call into question the state of the country’s political sphere, many seeing his election as proof of the deteriorating state of democracy in the country. In light of this, the work moves forward to define what democracy is. It discusses key aspects of democracy adopted during the founding stage of the US and how the country’s political culture changed following the Great Depression. Other sections analyze the country’s current political culture, the mechanisms put in place to enable democracy and the need to safeguard it.

By including the United States’ past political culture, Democracy: Is This How It Dies offers a comprehensive picture of what democracy was intended to be by the founding fathers of the country and what such a system means to the average American in modern times. The work also examines what democracy actually means and the misconceptions that surround it. The book is brief yet thought-provoking as it covers specific topics that relate to the overall subject. External sources are quoted including those of earlier scholars who have examined the topic, which makes the discussions comprehensive. Timely and impactful, Democracy: Is This How It Dies by Jeff Hawkins is an important work that analyzes the meaning of democracy in view of past and present political cultures.
