Detroit Tigers: Michigan's Favorite Sports Team by Roger Yoder is the newest addition and latest installment in the Ultimate Baseball book series. In this meticulously researched tome, readers can immerse themselves in the rich history of the franchise, reliving each season month by month through comprehensive yearly reviews that cover hitting, pitching, and defense. But this book is so much more than just a retelling of the Tigers' past. It includes an in-depth analysis of the team's performance over the decades, with break-out boxes highlighting the hitting and pitching leaders of each era. Yoder also features player and pitcher of the year selections, as well as all-decade teams and pitching staffs, and in one of the most intriguing aspects of his book, Yoder introduces readers to new analytical evaluations, including the Most Effective Hitter (MEH) and Most Effective Pitcher (MEP), with new metrics provide a fresh perspective on the Tigers' performance throughout their history.

I grew up an Oakland A's fan, but I am more of a reader who appreciates their home team with unwavering passion and this is what drew me to Detroit Tigers by Roger Yoder. I also love all things baseball history and the amount of exhaustive research that went into the making of Yoder's book cannot be understated. It is absolutely extraordinary. To me, the most interesting part was the Tiger rankings where Yoder serves up All-Time bests which, if we're being completely honest here, is going to be the first place where even the most patient reader will go. It's a huge list that tops off at 150 and is then further sectioned by team/season, position, starters, relievers, and the best of the best of Tiger pitching history. I didn't go into this book a Detroit Tigers fan, but I certainly walked away with a newfound respect for a team I hadn't paid much attention to in the past. I am that certain others, including Michigan fans but also the greater baseball fan base at large, will feel the same way. Very highly recommended.
