Disconnected by Riley Cross is a dystopian science fiction story revolving around Chiara, a genius and an Anomaly. It was already hard enough to live life as a contradiction, not belonging anywhere in Unity. Her life was further torn to shreds when her family members all died mysteriously. Chiara had nobody other than her loyal robotic companion, Kaynine. However, the deaths of her parents and her grandfather were not as they seemed. As she set off to uncover the truth behind the heavily guarded walls of the Unity and the family deaths, she risked losing everything that she knew, including her lifelong best friend, Silas.

Disconnected by Riley Cross is an interesting insight into advanced technology taking over humankind, and eventually rendering humans nothing more than lab rats that are constantly being watched by Auto, the AI. The setting of the dystopian era was nicely executed with a cold and rigid atmosphere, outlining a bleak and robotic future for everyone within Unity. I thoroughly enjoyed following Chiara’s character growth, from her struggles with being an out-of-place Anomaly to her drive and determination to overtake Auto for the sake of future generations. I also liked the complicated relationship between Chiara and Silas, and how their bond developed as the story unfolded. This is a wonderfully written novel featuring love, loss, betrayal, sacrifices, and freedom. I would recommend this book to science fiction lovers looking for an exciting and mind-bending read.
