Jan Foster’s Disrupting Destiny is a fantasy beginning in 1417. A female Fae has changed her human lover into a Fae. Together, the pair attempts to live among ordinary people. As they are fully dependent on receiving their life force from others, their behavior sets them apart and causes them to stay on the move. Adopting the identities of Annabella and Joshua, they enter Beesworth as a seamstress and a silversmith respectively. After an affluent woman requests Annabella’s services, Lady Hanley tells her she knows who Annabella is. In terror, Annabella tries to convince Joshua to leave immediately, but he persuades her to stay until they can retrieve their possessions. However, the discovery of a child’s body and Annabella's disappearance cause Joshua to rush into the woods.
Jan Foster’s ability to describe the intensity of love between Annabella and Joshua is enchanting. The amount of danger the pair faced increased with every page. Lady Hanley and Annabella’s brother were the two characters that I disliked the most. Their narrow perspectives supported their insensitive attitudes. I found the story refreshing, with its building suspense and supporting characters that were just as colorful as Annabella and Joshua. Every step contained a new challenge and a variety of solutions. Several anomalies added humor to the story. A monk who was a witch, a daemon who loved a Fae, and an old man who loved a Fae but thought other Fae were evil are just some of the interesting characters encountered. The story's ending was bittersweet, but it also left room for a sequel. Disrupting Destiny will appeal to readers who appreciate fantasy romances with exotic settings and a sense of intrigue.
