Tessa McFionn’s Divine Challenges is the second book in the Rise of the Stria series. Evainne has saved Captain Kahlym’s brother, Brel, from certain death. An attack by Qaen had cost Kahlym Lozzan, and they made the decision to land on Raedyn Septicon to find help. Kahlym brings Evainne to Queen Khundyl's palace for safety. Khundyl advises Kahlym that his father is offering a large reward for him and Evainne. Anaxar Kahlym instructs his soldiers to capture Evainne. Anaxar falls for Evainne’s charade of being a scared, airheaded girl. She hopes she can keep up the act until Kahlym can rescue her. Despite his devotion to Evainne, Kahlym has a hard decision to make regarding her safety. Can he keep her safe with him, or would it be better to send her back to Earth?

Tessa McFionn brings Evainne’s abilities into focus. As a Divine, she can heal people, read thoughts, and manipulate objects. Evainne's training in martial arts makes her a formidable adversary whom many of her bigger opponents underestimate. I could see Anaxar’s bullying tactics in how he thought women were below him. His treatment of his wife cultivated her resentment toward her son and Evainne. The transitions between character perspectives were smooth. Espionage, betrayal, and emotional turmoil fill every page with unpredictable twists, pulling me into the story. Each event was easy to envision, and character growth gave depth to the plot. Fans of science fiction stories where individuals from lower classes overcome adversity will appreciate Divine Challenges: Rise of the Stria Book Two.
