Author Biography

Janet Morris Grimes may not have realized she was a writer at the time, but her earliest childhood memories were spent creating fairy-tale stories of the father she never knew. That desire to connect with the mysterious man in a treasured photograph gave her a deep love for the endless possibilities of a healing and everlasting story.

Do Your Best, Tess! is an entertaining and educational book by Janet Morris Grimes. I found this story to be motivational and inspiring when it comes to helping children understand the importance of doing their best. I really liked Tess as a character. She has a realness and honesty about her. She’s a little rebellious in her own way, but that’s what makes reading about how she changes such a journey worth following. Her personal quest helps children to see the need to have their own personal reason to do their best. Without such a reason, it might seem like they are just trying to do what others are saying is best for them. The author brings out this important fact in several well-thought-out ways to which children can relate. It is a good book for parents, seeking to inspire their children to do their best, to keep in mind.

Jake Robbins is the illustrator. The drawings are so full of color and life and really complement Tess’s personality. Her world is full of activity and distractions and those little temptations that can interfere with staying on track, and the illustrator captures all this in an energetic way. In addition, there is a really cool set of characters in this story, and I won’t spoil it for you by telling you too much about them. But they pop in often, and their background and images are ebullient and cheerful and so supportive. My thanks to you, Janet Morris Grimes, for Do Your Best, Tess! It was an enjoyable and fun read for me.
