Doing Diabetes Differently: Empower a Healthier You by Chad T. Lewis is a non-fiction medical/science self-help guide for those looking to dig deeper than run-of-the-mill jargon and focus on diabetes management through the lens of daily lifestyle. Lewis writes with the aim of educating readers so they are able to make well-informed transformations in their lives beyond prescription care and find the balance between medication and day-to-day behaviors. Broken down into nine distinct and interconnected chapters, Lewis covers a wide range of information that includes topics such as reconfiguring our outlook and mentality, macronutrients and dietary details, exercise, pharmaceuticals, and the tech contraptions that confuse the heck out of most readers.

I've watched someone I care about lose their eyesight in high school because they believed injections and pills were all that was necessary to curtail the scarier pieces of diabetes while eating a bag of M&Ms with diet cola. She honestly had no idea what to eat, what to look for on nutrition labels, the value of whole foods, or the importance of moderation and exercise. I think if Doing Diabetes Differently was published in the late 90s, we'd still be going to see movies together. Chad T. Lewis writes with authority but does so in an accessible way. It's comfortable and informative, and it's easy to dog-ear specific points to further reference. I most enjoyed the section on net carbs as even for someone who does not have diabetes, the tips here are applicable to anyone who is open to a better, healthier, stronger way of living. Very highly recommended.
