Double Z: Day of the Mantid by Ann McCallum is a delightful chapter book for early-to-intermediate readers. Zachary Zinsky, aka “Double Z”, has just entered 4th Grade at Granite Elementary School. The trouble is, he was now the new kid at school. Both his parents had gotten new jobs in a new town, so Zach had no choice but to move with them. Worse, he could no longer walk to his Grandpa’s house, because Grandpa still lived in their old town. But those problems paled when he first laid eyes on his new teacher, Ms. Paradise. There was definitely something wrong with her! As if Zach didn’t already feel bad enough, Ms. Paradise appeared to have it in for him. Everything he tried to do was wrong, it seemed. How will Zach survive 4th Grade at Granite Elementary?

Double Z is a fun story, perfectly suited for young readers who are ready to advance beyond the introductory reading level. Zach is an inventive and clever young man with a knack for finding trouble, but his pranks are mostly innocent; your children will find him to be an amiable companion. The author did a commendable job crafting this story; there are a number of challenging words that will expand young readers’ vocabulary, while perhaps facilitating an interest in doing their homework. Double Z is well written, entertaining and educational. McCallum has written half a dozen books for young readers, and each one includes a healthy dose of educational material cleverly woven into the fabric of the tale. McCallum makes learning fun! Your child will enjoy this book, and will learn things that may impress you.
