In Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning by Zadia Tyson, growing up in the South in the forties and fifties, the author always believed in attending church each Sunday wearing only the finest items of clothing. However, when she began teaching at a local Sunday school, she quickly realized that the church was a place to nurture your relationship with God and Jesus Christ and your outward appearance was of secondary importance. Discover why it is more important that you are clothed in compassion, kindness, humility, and love, not finery. The book offers guidance to truly experience the presence of God, and to live a life that is authentic to your faith. By understanding the origins of the church and the moral traits you must possess to bring you closer to God, you will gain a clear vision of your spiritual path. Transform your faith, spirituality and relationship with God and become a Christian that worships from the heart.

Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning by Zadia Tyson takes a refreshing, unique look at faith and will inspire you to take another look at the teachings of the Bible. The guide is full of passages from the Bible that reinforce the message that your attendance in church is just a small part of being a true Christian. I loved the section on worship and prayer; it was so uplifting. I also appreciated how the author cuts through all the finery and gets straight into the core beliefs and actions a Christian must possess. After reading this book, I came to the conclusion that many people who believe they are Christians are not acting in accordance with what God expects. I agree totally that a person's outward appearance has no spiritual value. But it is also full of encouraging words to people who have lost their faith to establish a new relationship with God and Jesus Christ. A relationship that is solid, meaningful, and nurturing. The acronym of BIBLE - 'basic instructions before leaving earth' - was a perfect summary. I loved this in-depth no-nonsense guide because it advocates for Christians to be encouraging, non-judgmental to others, kind, compassionate, and forgiving. I chose this quote from the book as it sums up the essence of the book perfectly: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; they worship me in vain.” (Matthew 15:8–9a)

Containing insightful discussions of what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus, Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning by Zadia Tyson examines discipleship, worship, fellowship, and stewardship as important elements in the lives of every Christian. Tyson begins by explaining the importance of having a personal relationship with God. She also discusses God’s character and who He is according to the Bible. The second chapter discusses aspects of the Church including its origin and purpose. Other chapters focus on the four fundamental concepts of the work. In discussing worship, for instance, Tyson explains worship as a continuous lifestyle characterized by studying scriptures, praying, giving, forgiveness, and obedience. Stewardship is defined as a Christian’s responsibility to grow, maintain, and wisely utilize God’s gifts.

Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning by Zadia Tyson contains many encouraging and thought-provoking discussions that focus on the important elements of Christianity. When reading, I was reminded of the foundational aspects of Christianity. The work is written in straightforward language that anyone can understand. Tyson also explains the components of each topic and provides ideas of how the information can be actualized. For example, when examining fellowship, she explains it as a relationship between God and other believers. Showing compassion, humility, love, and encouragement are some of the ways explored in the book which enhance fellowship. Resources that can be used for further study and research of the topics are also included at the end. Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning is an important work that is clearly written and explained.

Dressed for Church on Sunday Morning by Zadia Tyson is a Christian living and spiritual growth non-fiction book that centers around the traditional custom amongst members of a congregation to attire themselves in their 'Sunday best' clothes. Over the course of six chapters, Tyson identifies and illustrates the multiple facets of what it means to be a Christian, a true disciple of Christ, covering scripturally backed themes that encompass from God in the lives of His believers and the origins of the church, to worship and discipleship, fellowship, and stewardship. While Tyson places focus on the intent and honest predilection congregants have as they clothe themselves for service, Tyson zeroes in on this inclination by stating, “Every time the Bible refers to “clothing oneself,” or “putting on,” it is in regard to one’s spiritual life and not to the outward appearance.”

Zadia Tyson has written an easy to understand guide that clarifies metaphors within the scripture and separates them from literal applications in Dressed for Church on Sunday. In truth, the underlying theme of Christians decking themselves out in fancy clothing and elegant hats for church is just a foundation Tyson has set to build the message on. The most poignant part for me was in chapter three, Discipleship, and being a prayer warrior with genuine humility when we commune with the Lord. This is expanded to the answering of prayer by God and a particular area that stood out was in the explanation that God does answer each and every prayer, but sometimes that answer is 'no', and sometimes it is 'wait'. Overall, I found this guide to be enlightening and believe it will be embraced by those who choose to read it.
