M.M. Wakeford’s science-fiction romance Duplication (Love Against the Odds Book 2) is unique. The story is set in an alternate universe and on a planet identical to Earth, but traditional moral values are completely reversed. Dominic and two colleagues are deployed to undertake a classified six-month mission to gather intel for the government. Lainey is assigned to integrate them into the community. Dominic is shocked by the attire, as it is completely see-through. In Lainey’s universe, this type of clothing and uninhibited sexuality is normal. They encounter people engaging in sexual acts everywhere. Dominic and Lainey are mutually attracted to each other, but they are both aware that Dominic must return to Earth. How will love cross universal divides? Is it possible for Lainey to go with Dominic? With only six months to spend together, they jump head-first into a relationship full of unknown implications.

Duplication is a book best approached with an open mind. While outwardly it appears as if the story challenges morality, it raises several questions for reflection. An issue that I found interesting concerned the majority versus the minority. On Earth, morals require clothing except in certain places and couples tend to be monogamous. In the alternate universe, clothing and monogamy are considered to be a part of a cult ideology. Which one would you prioritize though - personal choice or authority? The vivid imagery is well done, while the emotions of Lainey and Dominic are portrayed through first-person narration. The transitions between Lainey and Dominic are effortless. The technology in the alternate universe is more advanced and the means to travel between worlds was described as a magical divide. M.M. Wakeford spared no effort and the deeper meaning kept my attention with an evolving storyline. I would recommend this book to open-minded readers who like romance novels immersed in relatable emotions and the adaptability of characters outside their comfort zone.
