Edge of the Woods (Moonrise Book 1) by Jules Kelley sees Leland Sommers swerve to avoid hitting something on the road into Pine Grove. The new dedicated Deputy is surprised to discover a naked, bleeding boy called Diego. Taking the youth to an emergency clinic, Leland meets Dr. Fenton and Hayley Fern, the Nature Preserve director. Leland doesn’t realize Hayley is the Alpha of the local werewolf pack and Diego has just been turned. Hayley takes Diego back to her cabin to mentor him through his transition. A body has been discovered down the road, apparently the victim of a vicious animal attack. Hayley and Leland must solve the crime and manage their growing attraction. Hayley knows the perpetrator is a rogue werewolf and longs to be able to tell Leland the truth about herself.

Edge of the Woods by Jules Kelley is set somewhere in Montana, which ideally suits the fantasy aspects of the tale. I liked the fact the werewolves were organized into a community. Lycan characters who can manage their more bestial urges and live among humans always appeal to me. It was easy to sympathize with Hayley as it was clear she was trying to do the right thing. The trans-gender character of Michelle also added a satisfying touch of inclusiveness. I enjoyed the distinction between “born” and “turned” wolves, which I felt was original to this volume. The suspense mounted as I wondered which of the outsider wolves might be the culprit, and itched to see Hayley reveal her true nature to Leland. This is an exciting shifter romance packed with thrills and suspense.
