Emma's Tapestry is a dramatized rendition of the life story of author Isobel Blackthorn's great-grandmother, Emma Taylor. In 1939, Emma Taylor, a private nurse, converses with Jewish heiress Adela Schuster as she relates tales of her friendship with Oscar Wilde, sparking a trip down memory lane for Emma. Born to German immigrant parents in Philadelphia, Emma Harms grows up to be a talented nurse who meets textiles manager Ernest Taylor, her future husband, during her early twenties. As World War I rages on, Emma travels the world with Ernest, including surviving a sepoy mutiny in Singapore and witnessing the rice riots in Kobe, Japan. However, as the years go by, their relationship becomes increasingly strained, and Emma finds herself raising two little girls all by herself in a town infested by the KKK.
Isobel Blackthorn tells a moving story about a strong-willed and tenacious woman who finds herself abandoned by her self-obsessed and apathetic husband at the time of her greatest need. This is a tale of a woman overcoming overwhelming odds to protect and raise her children. A character-driven drama at its heart, Emma's Tapestry seamlessly incorporates real-life historical events that add an extra layer of authenticity to the narrative. The characters pull you in and keep you hooked till the end. While listening to Adela's tales about Oscar, it's easy to grasp how Emma relates to the complicated situation that Constance finds herself in due to her own husband's infidelity. If you enjoy historical fiction based on true stories, I highly recommend Emma's Tapestry.
