Endless Sky is a work of fiction in the coming of age, LGBTQ+, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is aimed at young adult readers and was written by Christopher Renna. The book follows teenager Josh Cooper who keeps to himself at school to avoid bullying for being openly gay. When he begins secretly dating the school’s wrestling star - who is still closeted - a world of self-discovery opens up to him, though one that is interrupted when the kid who bullied him turns up dead, but nobody is accused of the murder. Was there foul play in the death, or did it have something to do with the mysterious lights in the sky?

I adored this introspective and emotional story about taking the first steps to truly learn about yourself in the real world. Christopher Renna has found a unique voice for this story type that allows the reader to become absorbed in Josh’s growth throughout the plot whilst deftly avoiding the clichés of the genre. Josh’s slow-burning relationship with Matt is a gorgeous catalyst for Josh’s journey, and I particularly enjoyed the natural way that the relationship developed tentatively and revealed more about both the characters involved and the wider society in which they lived. Endless Sky even manages to juggle this character study against the mystery of the lights in the sky and Eric’s death, neatly weaving the strands of these seemingly disparate stories into one beautiful tapestry that depicts a teen's transition into an adult. An absolute must-read, I recommend this book to all.
