Everybody's Special is a work of fiction in the sports, urban, and slice-of-life subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience owing to scenes of graphic violence, and was penned by author Christopher Griffin. In this gritty, realistic, and heartfelt account of struggling to achieve your dreams and make a success of your life, we follow the exploits of our protagonist Phoenix Merlo, a boxer known as “The Blackbird.” Landing in an unfortunate situation where he usually throws his fights to work off his debts, Phoenix becomes desperate to break free of the cycle and do what makes him happy at any cost.

Author Christopher Griffin offers so much in this rich, in-depth, and literary-quality work of urban sports fiction. Deeply character-driven, the portrayal of Phoenix and his cycle of grief and guilt over his past mistakes is a harrowing journey with painfully accurate moments of deep darkness. This sets the stage fantastically for a true uphill climb and a struggle of epic proportions as everything seems to be against him. I also really enjoyed the fact that I genuinely learned a lot about boxing and MMA from the work, such was the level of detailed research put into the novel, and the terminology and immersion used really helped to convey this all naturally in context. Overall, I would highly recommend Everybody's Special to fans of detailed and realistic urban fiction that allows you to lose yourself in the mind, heart, and soul of another and walk in his shoes.
