Marianne Jennings has provided a complete text that covers all aspects of astronauts and space travel. The book is appropriately named as it includes everything. It is beyond amazing how much technology has advanced since the beginning of the space program. The photos alone make this book an excellent resource. Jennings writes about topics as varied as what astronauts eat and how they eat it to describing the International Space Station. Other topics covered include launches, spacesuits, spacewalks, living in weightlessness, returning to Earth, and many more. Jennings includes information about cosmonauts and those from other countries who have traveled in space. There are numerous photos, a glossary of space terms, an index, a resources page, and a quiz about what the book covers.

Everything About Astronauts Vol. 2 is a fascinating book. Although the topic is, by definition, extremely complex, Marianne Jennings breaks it down into easy-to-read and understandable bites. The book is extremely well researched and thorough. Jennings is a fine writer who understands how to provide complex information in an uncomplicated and entertaining way. Although the author says the book is for teens and older, younger readers would also find much of the content interesting. I highly recommend this book, not just to those who already have an interest in the topic. As the title indicates, this is the second volume, with another planned. Readers who hadn’t previously thought much about astronauts and space travel will have their interest piqued from the first page.

Do you know what foods are banned on the International Space Station? There is a reason why astronauts don’t eat ice cream in space. Did you know astronauts have to wear diapers and why? There’s a lot of space debris out there – do you know why this is a problem? Does outer space have a smell? Did you know that astronauts in Russia and the United States have their unique traditions for pre-launch? Some of these traditions are historical, others are superstitious. In Everything About Astronauts Vol. 2: Fascinating Fun Facts and Trivia about Astronauts for Teens and Adults by Marianne Jennings, readers will learn that there’s more to going into space than wearing a smart suit designed for space travel and boarding a spaceship or shuttle. Some of the things you never thought about are real issues for space travelers.

Marianne Jennings’ book Everything About Astronauts Vol. 2, is the latest in the series. The book is full of fun facts, things we wouldn’t normally think about when following space missions. Like the first book, this one is well organized with categories including astronaut traditions and superstitions, life on the international space station (including sleeping arrangements, hygiene, clothing, exercise, and don’t forget the fun and entertainment), weird space ailments, and random trivia like going to the bathroom in space. The introduction clearly outlines the author’s intent and she wraps things up nicely at the end with some trivia questions (complete with answers), a glossary of terms and space acronyms, a resource for further reading on space travel, and a little bit about herself. There are quotes and photographs of various astronauts over the years including Canadian Chris Hadfield. This makes a fascinating and fun read for those interested in space travel.

There are links to the sources in the E-book, so if a person wants to do further research on their own, they can do it with the aid of the links. I liked this book because I learned some new information that I did not know before reading this book. Some of the interesting information in this book include the following information: The difference between spacesuits and pressure suits were mentioned. They breathe 100% oxygen during their spacewalks having the nitrogen flushed out. Americans are in constant control with Mission Control while the Russians are not in constant control with the Russian version of Mission Control. The candy of choice for astronauts is M&Ms. One of the biggest manufacturers of space food is Bulgaria. The International Space Station was built in space using robotic arms and lots of space walks. It was never built completely on the Earth. Space walks are dangerous. The most popular meal for NASA astronauts in space is the freeze-dried shrimp cocktail. For those people who want to know more about astronauts and what they encounter in their jobs, I highly recommend this book to them.
