Fair Helen’s Midnight by D.L. John is a short story written in a free verse style of poetry and is about a woman connecting and discovering the deep love she feels for her island, culture, and traditions. Though the world may have looked down on her and her people, she has made peace with the past and acknowledges that those scars have helped to shape who she is. As poetry often goes, there is room for interpretation and Fair Helen could also be the island itself, taking the form of a woman and expressing its love for its people through her.

D.L. John has done a beautiful job of creating a sense of love and appreciation for the self in this short but inspirational book. Fair Helen’s Midnight delivers a very empowering and universal message of loving and embracing who we are, where we come from, and being proud of all the elements that make us unique. The importance of self-love and our undeniable connection to our roots is roused and solidified in this elegantly written book. The illustrations were bright and beautiful and highly enhanced my experience and my connection to the words as well as my understanding of the narrative. I think we need more books of this nature that remind us of the beauty and authenticity that we all have if only we could recognize and nurture it. A really cool feature is the section at the end titled Colour Your Tranquil, which basically consists of copies of each illustration used in the book left uncolored, and this gives the reader the opportunity to color them in. I thought that was consistent with the theme of uniqueness and embracing who and what we are.
