Fearless Joe Dearborne is a story for preteens by Lisa Whitney Mitchell. Joe Dearborne earned the nickname “Fearless Joe” because he often does brave, but dangerous deeds, like rescuing a dog from a burning house. His father goes away, hiring the strange, intimidating Mrs. Chill to care for him, much to Joe’s dismay. He knows that Mrs. Chill is not as pleasant as she appears to everyone else. He is convinced that she spitefully hid his lucky shirt, and she forces him to clean the house, telling everyone she did it. If Joe had not smelled her garlic breath, he would have thought she was a witch. When Joe overhears Mrs. Chill’s ruthless plans for getting rich, he knows he must do something to stop her before she harms the people he cares about.

Fearless Joe Dearborne is a very entertaining book that preteens will love. Lisa Whitney Mitchell ensures there is never a dull moment with her creatively developed story. It is loaded with lots of humour, a bit of sadness, and a good mystery that makes Joe wonder if he is as fearless as his nickname suggests. I like Joe, who does similar things that adults forgot they experienced while growing up. Mrs. Chill lives up to her name and is definitely creepy, while Aunt P. is slightly eccentric but dotes on Joe. One of my favourite parts in the story is learning what a lambdoodle is and I found it funny. Lisa Whitney Mitchell has written a great book for preteens.
