Finer Than Frog Hair by Scott Anderson is a fun tale set in Colorado and is chock full of idioms. The Newton family, from Denver, set out to visit their friends, the Colsgroves, who live in Steamboat Springs. The whole family is going, including their cute, inquisitive dog Mochi. When they arrive, one of the first things Mochi hears is that Mr. Colsgrove's family is "finer than frog hair". Mochi is quite confused, and she wonders what a frog having hair has to do with how you are feeling. As the visit continues, she hears more and more confusing phrases. She is not the only one as young Natalie Newton is also wondering why the Colsgroves say so many unusual things.

Finer Than Frog Hair introduces several idioms that kids may have heard but not understood. Scott Anderson does a bang-up job of incorporating an introduction to idioms with an enjoyable family story. Anderson has included some familiar sayings and some more unusual ones that will have both kids and adults laughing. Réka Kárpát's illustrations depict a diverse cast of characters. Mochi is a dog full of personality, with her blue bandana and quizzical expressions. A particular delight is the literal depictions of those unusual idioms. The frog looks especially fine with its long flowing locks. Idioms are one of the trickiest things to pick up when learning a new language. This is a fun way for kids and English language learners to remember and understand these silly idioms. This book makes learning idioms a piece of cake!
