The sequel to Against My Better Judgment, Fire and Ice by B.T. Polcari will fascinate readers with this heart-pounding crime mystery that breaks boundaries. Sara Donovan’s job involves working in the museum’s vault, deep within the bowels of the main building. While she is working as an archivist for her internship, the museum will be hosting a diamond and ruby exhibition called Fire and Ice. Sara joins the chief curator and the security staff in placing the gemstones in a high-security vault. Sara ignores the strict no-photo-taking rules as she steals a few snapshots. Little does she know that the end of her work day is just about to begin. A power outage raises her suspicion that theft is taking place when she tries to look for her dog Mauzzy in the dark after he escapes from his carrier. Mauzzy keeps scratching at a wall as if the pooch hears something on the other side of the vault. Sara’s suspicion grows when she sees that the photo she has taken of the Star of Midnight diamond and the one on display don’t match.

B.T. Polcari sure knows how to put a new twist on a genre that is saturated with formulaic plotlines. He makes it easy for readers to be part of the action through a first-person POV narrated by Sara. You inhabit the protagonist’s persona to get to know the other characters that are instrumental in pushing the plot’s mystery forward. Meticulous attention to detail and research has been undertaken, judging from the way Polcari shows you the nitty-gritty things that surround Sara’s immediate workplace. From the outline of the museum to Sara’s little cubicle, it’s an immersive reading experience that has the right blend of characterization, plot, and setting. Fire and Ice does not disappoint, and Sara Donovan is a new fictional sleuth to watch out for.
