Philippa Jane Keyworth’s romance Fool Me Twice (Ladies of Worth, Book 1) features Caroline "Caro" Worth and her struggle to survive. When Caro’s father died, he left Caro and her brother James with nothing. James abandoned his sister, so Caro moved to London, taking Libby and John Williams with her. Caro dons a black wig and dresses up. With John as a bodyguard, Caro goes to a gambling hall using the name Angelica Worth. She managed to win enough to keep her house. After an especially lucrative night, Caro was in a private room putting away her money when a drunken man barged in. After a brief conversation, Caro rushed away. The following day Caro was eating with her friend Rebecca when Lord Avers and Tobias Felton entered. Looking at Felton, Caro feared that she would never be accepted by high society.

Caro and Felton were likable characters. Philippa Jane Keyworth’s attention to detail and their pleasing personalities allowed me to connect with them. I liked Felton’s ease in creating a relaxed atmosphere. There were a few scenes where I was angry with Caro’s attempts to prove that she was too good for Felton when she was around Rebecca. I discovered an underlying message of honesty that trumped what everyone else might think about a person. Entertaining dialogue and the loyalty of good friends kept me completely immersed in the story. The plot was unpredictable, and the sense of danger added to the suspense. Caro’s transitions into Angelica were easy to follow. I recommend Fool Me Twice to readers who like a slow-burn romance with well-developed characters who are quick-witted.
