For What It's Worth by Kelli Milligan Stammen is a historical romance with an anti-hero and a fantastic story. Set in the late 1960s when the Vietnam war was still at its peak, Becca Schmidt was an up-and-coming journalist. She was covering the war and that was how she met the enigmatic yet handsome Jesse Wager. While there was no denying the attraction between them, Jesse was reluctant to let Becca in and explore what could be the best thing that might happen to them. With a painful past holding him back, Jesse was a little hesitant, but Becca wasn’t giving up. However, Becca wasn’t having the best time either. With the Vietnam War in the background, both Becca and Jesse had past issues to resolve and decisions to make. Were they meant to be together?

I always prefer romantic novels that have a story to tell with personal issues, room for growth, and incredible journeys that leave a satisfying feeling. Becca was a smart girl with a lot of passion and determination. She fell for Jesse, and there was nothing that could stop her. Becca was a force of nature and nothing could have prepared Jesse for that. While Becca was the perfect female lead, Jesse was the perfect anti-hero. He was mean at times, and his insecurities made him hard, but he had redeeming qualities that made me love him, although not immediately. Kelli Milligan Stammen did a great job with setting the background in For What It’s Worth. She recreated the tension and the wave of depression during the 60s and the sociopolitical climate of the time. She brought a different aspect of the Vietnam war to the table. Just when I thought I had read everything about this era, the author surprised me in the best way possible. Highly recommended.
