Fox Tales by Dee Carey is a masterful work comprising two novellas with love at the core. After reading them you will never look at foxes in the same way again. The first story, Mark of the Fox, lets you step into the world of druids, wizards, and witches, as a young prince dreams of becoming the greatest falconer not only in Ireland but in the whole world. Training wild things is not like feeding scraps to dogs in the great hall. There is an enchanted fox who will ask the young prince whether he wishes her to be a woman or a fox. The second story, The Fox and the Swan, tells the tale of Rory MacTaggert who didn’t mind being a fox as a result of a curse when his wealthy father became attracted to a witch. The pangs of true love make Rory yearn to become human, and he wonders if there would ever be a future for him and his beloved Fionna.
Fox Tales is a serious work. It is delightful, enchanting, witty, and pays homage to classic fantasy and fairy tale characters, notably Merlin and the Swan Princess. Dee Carey presents an enchanting narrative that pulls you into a world filled with fascinating characters and a fantastic panorama. It develops inside your head in a simply astonishing manner. This book is one of those contemporary fantasy stories that are excellent when it comes to expressing the power of love. Dee Carey seems to know all there is to know about fusing romance and magic. Both tales are intense and rich, and they accomplish a satisfying arc that most romantic fantasies do not. The collection will strongly appeal to anyone who loves romantic fairy tales.
