Frankenbots: Sunken City of Scraps by Michael Ferrone is a charmer of a children's story. This cute, energetic little book is packed with things kids love to read about: space, robots, steampunk, and lots more. It's a story about working together for a common cause--something really important: survival. Trying to avoid catastrophe, the Frankenbots allow their differences to take a back seat and realize that working together can accomplish more, and is actually something they can be proud of. This is Ferrone's second installment featuring quirky but adorable characters. On a side note, Ferrone both writes and illustrates this book, and young readers will be enchanted and involved from the beginning. The rhymes are infectious, and parents will enjoy reading this as well as the kids. It definitely stirs the imagination, but the deeper meaning is nice too. Just right for story-time at home, libraries, or school.

I like how the author combines the old with the new, and his clever imagination seems to know no bounds, which is a good match for children who like wild and witty stories. The graphic novel/comic book layout is inviting and uncluttered, but full of things to look at and digest. You'll find thought bubbles and dialogue bubbles, and the story builds with suspense and emotion. My favorite part, personally, is when they go under the street and find all sorts of legendary items. In a way, it reminds you of a child's video game, and this is also an attractive feature, making for an easy, fun read. When they find the Sunken City, they realize that working together is the only solution. When you reach the end, you'll be glad to read that a third bot adventure awaits. Frankenbots: Sunken City of Scraps by Michael Ferrone is the perfect read for young and old.
