From Cad to Cadaver (A Black Ops Detective Agency Mystery) by Maria McKenzie is a sleuth mystery novel about Tracy, an ex-FBI agent, trying to find a murderer and prove her innocence. Tracy Jackson has some personal issues regarding men. Her experiences with them have left her with some major trust issues and a big bad attitude. After an appalling personal incident involving a shooting, Tracy resigns from the FBI in Atlanta and returns home to Cincinnati to set up her private investigation business, Black Ops.

Tracy's sister, Sheena, and Sheena's husband set Tracy up in an apartment and give her a small office in which she can open Black Ops. Her aunt sets her up with Terrance Jackson, a wealthy doctor, thinking he is a good match for Tracy. Terrance is a "good catch," but he likes to play the field. A no strings attached and a no commitment relationship is all right with Tracy. As long as he keeps his hands and other body parts to himself, she'll go out with him. Sheena also tries to set her up with Adam, an ex-Navy SEAL, as a date and also as a partner in her business. However, Tracy has already met Adam under very embarrassing circumstances and won't give him a chance to get reacquainted. That is until Tracy becomes the prime suspect in a murder and Adam is the only one who will listen to her claims of innocence.

From Cad to Cadaver (A Black Ops Detective Agency Mystery) by Maria McKenzie is an enjoyable murder mystery. I really liked the story and the characters. Tracy Black has attitude and then some. She is a wonderfully audacious character whose ungoverned tongue reminds me of Queen Latifah. Keeping in mind that she considered men untrustworthy, I rather enjoyed her cheeky way of dealing with them. Her compulsive need to do what she thinks is right has a way of backfiring and leaves her in compromising situations. This is an amusing sleuth mystery novel that I recommend to those who love a smart, sassy heroine.
