Can one run faster than their shadow? Can one outgrow their past? Such are the questions that From the Ashes by Bill Thomas answers, a great offering that will rivet fans of thrillers and character-driven stories. Jerold Volker is a man poised for success, the youngest Vice President of a prestigious bank in Cincinnati, but a man cursed by secrets from his past. A text that simply says, “Help me,” finds the protagonist on a perilous journey back into the past, back into the Kentucky home where the darkness began. Can he face his own darkness? Does he have the courage to do so?

This is an audio book that is beautifully crafted by Bill Thomas and wonderfully narrated by Chet Hanson in a very clear and fascinating voice. The story is about the power of secrets and how they can suddenly change the course of one’s life. Jerold Volker is a compelling character and it is interesting to notice how he is like most of us — for don’t we all have our dark secrets and aren’t we always afraid they may come out any moment? This character is well-developed and readers will see how he strives to hide his vulnerability behind his corporate mantle. The author infuses a lot of emotion into the story and explores the psychological depth of the characters in a subtle, yet compelling manner. This audio book is professionally narrated by the skilled Chet Hanson who allows the pace to flow beautifully, capturing the voice and the tone of the narrative in a way that enables the listener to follow every bit of the protagonist’s journey. From the Ashes is a compelling read, engrossing and skillfully written and performed.
