A deadly battle between the Light and Dark sets the tone in Danielle Marie Orsino’s From the Ashes: Birth of the Fae. Queen Aurora and Desdemona are battling the Dark Fae King Jarvok and his loyal dragon Drago, but the two are failing. As Jarvok moves in to kill Aurora, something catches his immediate attention. Aurora had moved her beloved Power Angel Brigade Memorial across the veil. Aurora reveals she was trying to protect it, and Jarvok considers ending the feud between the two Fae courts. Elated, Aurora prepares to host a banquet in honor of the peace. Aurora makes some questionable decisions before Jarvok arrives. Even Jarvok was surprised when she announces a union requiring marriage between them.

I enjoyed every moment of this dark fantasy. Danielle Marie Orsino took great care to provide vivid details of every character. There was never a moment I could not picture. The emotional pain Jarvok attempts to hide reflects in his leadership skills. Aurora is not as rigid and tries diplomacy in decision-making. She appears to avoid confrontation but is pushy and manipulative. Suspense builds as others plot to interfere with Aurora’s plans. The supporting characters in the story are catalysts by adding intrigue. I found humor in Jarvok’s lieutenant, Zion. He has a playful streak and makes others laugh, but is not afraid to be blunt, even to Jarvok. Readers interested in dark fantasy romances involving Fae, dragons, and an intense cliffhanger ending will enjoy From the Ashes. I am eager to read the sequel because the end left me craving more.
