Sam, Tai, and Val certainly were not expecting the conclusion of their middle school concert to be impacted by the roaring thunder of an attack by aliens from another timeline. But this is the hand they are dealt in Future Destiny by Ray LeCara Jr, the first book in The Torn Timeline series. The trio's social studies teacher, Mr. Rustam, and an unknown agent from the future sent to retrieve a TCP to help prevent the catastrophic collision of past, present, and future, save the kids from the carnage of the attack. However, they are then kidnapped by a nefarious madman named Gunner and transported hundreds of years into the future. Sam and Tai are deemed to be disposable, and Val, as a young female becomes a commodity. They need to get back home, but first, they must survive. Where are we? I think you might mean when are we.

Future Destiny is a well-written, fully engrossing foundation for this new series by Ray LeCara. The space jargon takes a few chapters to become accustomed to but contains the hyphenated names that tickle classic science fiction readers and a scaled emperor who pronounces the letter 's' like a snake. It is also about good versus evil where, on both sides, some are better than others; a conflict between the World Alliance and the Democratic National States. My one complaint is that Val is portrayed as a whiney, frilly teenage girl in a story dominated primarily by testosterone, and even if it is part of her character arc, it feels dangerously close to sexism and does not seem authentic. That said, Sam and Tai are spectacular and all three desperately need each other. Without trying to resort to puns, I see a future for this series and I am very excited to be on The Torn Timeline journey. Future Destiny is very highly recommended.
