Generation AI: Rise of the Parahumans is a work of fiction in the science fiction, political thriller, and suspense subgenres. It is suitable for the general adult reading audience. Penned by author W.R. Hulkenberg, and self-narrated, this highly engaging novel explores the cutting-edge intersection of artificial intelligence and human-like duplicates known as Parahumans. Created through the merger of deep artificial intelligence and near-human replicas, Parahumans become invaluable assets for the elite, including celebrities, crime bosses, and political leaders. However, as the technology spreads unchecked, unforeseen consequences arise when Parahumans develop their own personalities and objectives. FBI Deputy Director Michael Benchley races against time to navigate a complex web of intrigue spanning Hollywood, Tel Aviv, Tehran, and the White House. As the U.S. Senate grapples with defining the nature of this new "life" form and protecting Parahumans from exploitation, these creatures gain unprecedented capabilities, blurring the lines between man and machine in a scenario that feels eerily close to reality.

Author W.R. Hulkenberg has crafted an exhilarating literary experience that delves deep into the ethical and existential implications of advanced artificial intelligence. The story's rapid pace and intricate plot kept me on the edge of my seat throughout a lot of unpredictable but totally logical twists. I was also really impressed with the dedication to atmosphere and mood, with vivid, cinematic descriptions of scenes that immerse readers totally and match the tone of the characters’ challenges and eerie experiences. The exploration of AI’s potential for disaster is sure to leave readers questioning the impact of AI on society and the essence of what it means to be human long after the last page is turned.

In terms of audiobook presentation, Hulkenberg's self-narration added an extra layer of immersion, bringing the characters and their dilemmas to life with clarity and intensity. The vocalization is clear and direct, with the author’s passion for characterization and exposition at its best when the going gets tough. Overall, Generation AI is a thought-provoking and riveting exploration of the boundaries between humanity and technology, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.
