Author Biography

Gerry's Window tells the story of a young girl named Gerry, who after watching a parade becomes fixated on performing and applause. Gerry doesn't receive the attention she desires, but more importantly she finds that she doesn't enjoy doing parade performances. She returns to her true passion and suddenly onlookers take notice, but by then she is no longer focused on accolades, but simply enjoys her natural talent.

We wrote this book to convey to children the importance of authenticity and finding what makes one happy versus seeking acclaim. We feel it is an important message, especially in this day in age with our societal obsession with celebrity.

Gerry is a little girl who loves to draw pictures. She draws when she is at home, in the car, and anywhere she goes as she always takes her art supplies along. Gerry watches a parade and decides to imitate the activities so that she can get attention. Unfortunately, folks aren’t pleased to hear her loud banging on a drum. So Gerry’s next plan is to sing, but this doesn’t go down well with the neighbours as her voice is screechy. She sulks, but is soon inspired to draw images of the exciting things she saw at the parade. She draws and paints many beautiful pictures and her parents proudly display them on Gerry’s bedroom walls and windows. Pedestrians walking by are amazed at Gerry’s artistic talent, and she realizes that if she acts like herself and not like others, people will like her better. Gerry’s Window is written by Frances Cowley and Matt Johnson.

I am sure young readers have felt the same way as Gerry. They probably did things to attract more attention as well. Frances Cowley and Matt Johnson wrote a nice little story. This book tells kids in an interesting manner why it is much cooler to display their own personalities and talents. Gerry’s Window is a very pleasant story that is quick to read as it only contains about twenty-six pages. It is filled with appealing sketches, and is a good educational and motivational book. Small children will be entertained by this young girl’s antics.
