In the novel Ghoul of Sherwood: The Robin Hood Mysteries by Jay Ruud, Robin Hood returns to Sherwood Forest and infiltrates the Sheriff of Nottingham's archery competition incognito, only to be caught at the last moment. With the help of Lady Maude, the sheriff's wife, Robin escapes by swapping clothes. Ladies' clothes. Meanwhile, Friar Tuck, Robin's spiritual guide, heads to Wallingwells to aid the nuns of the Benedictine Priory in solving a grisly murder. As Tuck investigates, he discovers numerous suspects, including former lovers, a business partner, and the nuns themselves. Along for the ride, Robin has joined Tuck in Wallingwells to protect him and rescue Maid Marion from her captors. The investigation unearths haunting memories for Tuck, and with the assistance of his godmother, the town midwife, he strives to solve the mystery.
Perhaps the fact that I only live a couple hours' drive from Sherwood Forest, that we camp there every few years, and I once attended a wedding in the same chapel presumed to have been where Lady Marion and Robin Hood wed, I'm partial to books like Ghoul of Sherwood by Jay Ruud. However, I am even more partial to books that are engaging, engrossing, and feel at least as modestly authentic as the classic, and Ruud delivers in spades. I love Ruud's style of writing and he does stay true to the roots of the story, adding flourish to the prose with some intelligent wit and a lot of adventure. Ruud's reconstructed version had some unexpected twists and he even surprised me at one point. Overall, this is a fantastic read for a die-hard fan. Very highly recommended.
